DIC LICENSING AND MERCHANDISING ANNOUNCES ITS EXTENSIVE
LICENSING CAMPAIGN FOR "SAILOR MOON"
(BURBANK, CA) DIC Licensing and Merchandising unveiled today an
all-exclusive and extensive licensing program for "Sailor Moon," which
is widely anticipated as the next BIG girls property, it was announced
today by Joy Tashjian, President, DIC Licensing and Merchandising.
"Sailor Moon," which features a team of young girl superheroes who
defend the Earth against the evil Queen Beryl, will have a licensing
program that's all encompassing and which will also translate to all
major categories. There will be over 200 products supporting the
launch of the "Sailor Moon" television series, which premieres this
fall in more than 85% of the country.
In the apparel category, Cutler (warm-up suits, skirts,
sweatshirts, knit dresses, T-shirts, and fashion tops), Freeze (knit
T-shirts, fleece tops/fleece sets and baseball shirts) and High Point
Knitting (hats, gloves, mittens, scarves), are among the apparel
licensees planning to launch "Sailor Moon" products.
In accessories and domestics, "Sailor Moon" will be
well-represented by Pogoda Trading Company (athletic footwear, canvas
sandals, beachwear, slippers, slipper socks, and weather boots,) and
Bibb Company (flannel sheets, bed spreads, blankets, pillows, and
slumber bags).
"Sailor Moon" will also have an extensive back-to-school line of
products including Aladdin Industries (lunch kits), Noteworthy
(pencils, pens, markers, erasers, stamp pads and study kits) and Fun
Designs, Inc. (plastic and paper sandwich, juice box holders and snack
containers).
For Halloween, Collegeville/Imagineering will unveil costumes,
masks, and make-up kits. And after the kids get done trick or
treating, parents will be happy to know that Cosrich will introduce an
extensive health and beauty line consisting of bubble bath, bath and
shower gel, hand lotion, shampoo, soap, skin cream, nail polish,
tissues, brushes, combs, perfume, hair spray, and hair lotion.
Other licensees include General Electric (night lights), Farley
Foods (candy), Pyramid (backpacks, handbags, luggage, raincoats, and
umbrellas) and Merlin Editions (stickers and sticker albums).
In making the announcement, Tashjian stated: "We are pleased that
these licensees have entered into a partnership with us on this
exciting and ground-breaking property. With the support of these
licensees, we can now forge ahead onto our next phase of our campaign,
which is the development of a 'Sailor Moon' fan club as well as
working on a fast food, cereal, frozen product promotions."
As previously announced, Bandai America, the master toy licensee of
"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" will handle the master toy license of
"Sailor Moon." Buena Vista Home Video has also announced plans to
launch a "Sailor Moon" video series.
DIC Entertainment's "Sailor Moon," already a hit in France, Spain,
and her native Japan, has recieved a firm production commitment and
will premiere in the U.S. this Fall in more than 85% of the country.
Seagull Entertainment, which is handling domestic sales of "Sailor
Moon" in association with Sachs Finley Media, has cleared the strip,
Monday through Friday program in 45 of the top 50 markets.
Stations signing up include WPIX (New York), KCOP (Los Angeles),
WCIU (Chicago), WGBS (Philiadelphis), KBHK (San Francisco), WLVI
(Boston), WFTY (Washington, D.C.), KTXA (Dallas-Ft. Worth), WXON
(Detroit), WVEU (Atlanta), and KHTV (Houston), among others.
Known in Japan as "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon," the title character
in everyday life is a brash and disheveled 14-year-old who like most
Japanese junior high school students wears a sailor-style uniform.
Using magical broaches, scepters and compacts, Sailor Moon and her
girl companions transform into fast-thinking, stylish, superheroines
who use power rays to fight other-worldly demons.
DIC Entertainment is currently in production on 65 half-hour
episodes which will be launched in the U.S. market as "Sailor Moon."
In Japan, "Sailor Moon" handily out sells her superhero competitors.
Since going on the air in 1992, "Sailor Moon" has generated $1.58
billion (yen) in retail sales in Japan more than "Mighty Morphin Power
Rangers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" combined. The Incredible
World of DIC presents "Sailor Moon," which will feature modern themes
of female empowerment and provide strong role models for today's young
girls. The series will equally appeal to boys with evil villians,
intrigue, and suspense-- all the key elements of a successful action
series.
