Desktop Theme Kit - Help File

This file is meant to help you to install the components that make up your desktop theme set. Specifically, it will show you how to install Start-Up and Shut-Down screens, Desktop Wallpaper, Icons, and Sounds (WAV files). Before beginning, let me stress the importance of backing up your existing files -- even if you don't intend to use them again -- since some of them may be overwritten when installing some of the following files.

Wallpaper

Unzip the archive using a program such as WinZip. Copy the enclosed image file to your Windows directory, and make a mental note of its name.

Right-click any non-icon portion of your desktop. From the desktop menu, select Properties. You will then see a Background menu. Locate the file you copied to your Windows directory. Highlight it and click Apply, then click OK.

Tip: If you want the image to be centered on the screen, check the Center option, before clicking Apply.

Start-Up Screens

Unzip the archive using a program such as WinZip. Look in your root directory, and, if present, make a back-up copy of your current logo (look for a file named "logo.sys"). This can be easily done by renaming it to "logo.bak"). Copy the file in this archive to your root directory, and rename it "logo.sys".

Sounds

Copy your sound files (these will have a WAV extension) to the Media folder of your Windows directory.

Now, click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel. Find and double click the Sounds icon. You will then see a menu that will list all the Windows events to which you may associate sounds. Highlight the event you want to apply your sound file to, then use the Browse option to locate the desired sound you copied to the Media directory earlier. Repeat this procedure with each event you want to apply a sound to. Note that you can test a sound file by highlighting it and then clicking the Preview button.

After you have added all the sounds you care to, you should use the Save As option to save this particular sound scheme. Finally, click Apply, then click OK.

Icons

Copy your icon files (these will have a ICO extension) into an icon folder of your choice. In the example, I have created a folder named "Icons".

Next, from your desktop, right-click the program icon you want to replace. Then click the Change Icon option. Then click Browse from the next menu. Now, locate the folder in which you placed your icons, and double click the icon of your choice. Finally, click Okay. The new icon should appear on your desktop in a few seconds.

Shut-Down Screens

Look in your Windows directory for files named "logow.sys" and "logos.sys". These are your "Wait" and "Shut-Down" screens, respectively. Rename them (see Start-Up Screens, above). Copy your new Shut-Down image(s) to your Windows directory. Rename it "logow.sys", if it is a "Wait" image, or "logos.sys", if it is a "Shut-Down" image.

You should now see your newly installed screens the next time you shut down, or start up Windows.

If you still need a helping hand, check out Free Themes.   Among other things, they offer a number of free- and shareware programs that automate the installation process for you.
